Question for you mothers out there...

What is the one thing (or two, or three, or four...) you can't / couldn't live without with your first child? I need to buy a gift and I'm a little lost in France. Back home, I know Onesies and Boppies are pretty popular with mothers, and I figure I can probably find equivalents here. What were good, useful gifts you received that you really appreciated?

For you French moms, what are good brands that you like? I'm looking for a reasonable trade-off between quality and price. Today I asked my adult students about it, thinking it would be a quick warm-up, but ended up having quite a discussion about it. People recommended Tout Compte Fait, Natalys, and Petit Bateau, but said that Petit Bateau is a little pricey for something infants will grow out of so quickly.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Catimini is exactly what you are looking for

Does said person have a liste de naissance? That'd be a good place to start-finding something they've already picked out. If not, the most useful thing I've received is a gigoteuse (or tourbulette—same thing) which is basically a bag you strap your kid in to sleep (though an évolutive one is best--and can get pricey). If you do end up getting clothes, try to get something size 9 or 12 months, or even bigger. It seems EVERYONE buys 6 mos., so something for later on would probably be appreciated.
I've always had good luck chez Aubert and Natalys.

Thanks for all the advice, Janet and Doc! There isn't a liste de naissance so I'm trying to figure out where to start. The mom-to-be is also somewhat new here but seems to be on top of things...I'll check about a gigoteuse. I know they don't have a lot of clothes yet so I'll keep that in mind about the bigger sizes. Thanks again!

I couldn't live without the diaper wipe warmer, well that may be an exaggeration, but I felt so much better by not freezing that little bumbum!

btw, just so happens pickles was working on his post today! check it out, and make sure you leave a comment for him, so he is inspired to keep writing,. thats kinda why he stopped, he said, no one is realy interested in what I'm saying...so your comment on mine, I read that to him, and he got right on it..(you know the "fans" were calling ;)

The things I couldn’t live without where already bought in preparation for Leon's birth, by me (Bottle warmer, sleeping bag etc…)

I'd go for cloths from 9-12 months. I had tons of baby cloths 3-6 months (far too many) and nothing for when he was bigger.

For really cute and cheap baby cloths try "DPAM Bébe". Buy something a little special, something that a Mum wouldn't necessarily buy, as we all love dressing up our children when they are small.

Here is the link to DPAM:

Daipers...not a very hip gift I suppose, but a very practical one. I silently thanked the person who gifted me with overstock of various sized daipers. Saved me from going to the store! Unfortunately, the little buggers use them up!
