Back in the home that is France

Funny how time flies, except when you're on a plane. The flight back was okay and an airline that I shall refer to as New Chess Stairways did manage to locate our lost bag and deliver it to us within 48 hours. This I am eternally grateful for, since in that bag was A NEW KITCHEN RUG thoughtfully given to us by my sister who witnessed the craziness. Guess now I'll have to start mopping again, as my response to my husband's conviction that kitchen rugs are dirty and disgusting was to prove to him the floors could be much worse with or without a rug. I was hoping to end up with a giant US flag or eagle that said "God bless this kitchen" but the one we have is a nice, sedate brown which will nicely hide the onion peels.

I had a great trip home (the other one), although I'm a bit depressed now because I feel like I don't know how to be an American any more and I sure as hell am far from being truly French. I'm going to pull a Scarlett and think about that another day and focus on the positives -- the pumpkin and roasted sweet potato cheesecake, sausage balls, Dr. Pepper, and the obvious time spent with family and friends. My husband went to a car auction with my dad dressed in jeans, a sweatshirt and the official auction baseball hat (which is absolutely hilarious if you have ever seen my husband) and had a good time. His auctioneer imitation has been improving.

Happy new year to everyone...more posts are on the way.

Hey you! Glad you had a safe trip and a wonderful holiday season! Although I'm not crossing oceans/language barriers/etc, I go through a "funk" very similiar to what you described when I return from visits to Indiana. I've always referred to it as "cultural jetlag" because the gap between life in the Midwest and life here is bigger than the Grand Canyon. It always makes me think of Neil Diamond's song, "I Am, I Said." He gets it. Hope you are settled back into life and re-adjusted soon.

In the meantime, enjoy your kitchen rug! Yay!!!

I'm so glad you made it back to France safely!!

I'm sorry I didn't get to see you this time around. But you know, I think I prefer to visit you en France ;).

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to call you on Tuesday. Long story short: I have a new job and I start Monday.

Don't worry about how "American" you are/aren't : you are always my dear friend and that never changes.

Much love from Maine!

I don't think you can be just French or American. You are a mixing pot of all your experiences. Just like how I'm not just a "Riner" person. Nor a "Floyd County-ian" - -and now I'm a Giles County Person. I am enriched by all the places I've lived. We take the places we have been with us and become a new bread. Your are rich with culture! How lucky you are and your children will be for your experiences.

Happy New Year to you too.

Maybe you should get dual nationality. Then you can be both, and just tell both sides what you think. It has been a liberating experience for me. I can stop trying to be French because I am.
