Cute Movie and More Favorite Things

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day -- after work, I went to a Partylite candle party. I haven't been to one of those in forever, and as fate would have it the invitation came just after I purchased my very first candles here in France. Before, they were considered a luxury item, but when the blackout hit and we had NO way of lighting the apartment I convinced S. to invest in a few. At the local Bricorama I found Pumpkin Spice Yankee Candles and then we found cheap carrot cake smelling candles at IKEA. Yesterday I purchased some little votives of pumpkin and chestnut candles, because you know you just have to buy something at one of those parties (the overall damage was minimal). I am still so not good at making small talk in French at these kinds of occasions...if I have something I really want to say, I can get my point across, but I'm really not good at the 'filler' stuff, even in English (unless I'm with people I know well; then I have no problem being a smart-aleck). I'm sure they think I'm boring as hell, but I tried to look happy enough to make up for it a little bit.

We bought a few Christmas presents for the in-laws and had dinner at a local Tex-Mex restaurant, where I tend to avoid the "Mexican" food but enjoy the Americanized hamburgers. I miss beer, but have no trouble abstaining...still, before I met my husband I never thought the smell of beer would ever suddenly make me thirsty. I miss beer even more than margaritas, but I can tell you for sure that chocolate was the hardest thing to try to avoid during pregnancy. The highlight of the evening was watching Prete-Moi Ta Main, a comedy featuring Alan Chabat and Charlotte Gainsburg. It was a cute/sweet comedy and not too complicated to follow and understand, so I can easily recommend it to other expats or people studying French who are looking for a film that doesn't involve adultery as the key plotline. My husband kept laughing about a line that involved the phrase "Gulliver's toothpick," which had to be explained to me and I still didn't really see the humor in it, but other than that I didn't have any problems.

Do not avoid chocolate during pregnancy! Studies have shown that mothers who eat a small bit of dark chocolate daily during their pregnancy and while breast feeding have happier, healthier babies AND suffer less from post partum depression. It's a miracle food that stuff! Don't give it up (unless you are selflessly sacrificing to leave more for me, that it)

I loved the comment about chocolate
hope you did too and started right in to eating some.
The candle bit reminds me of all the times we've had to burn them or kerosene lamps. I guess you need one or two of those. Had a great week and hope yours was the same.

Here, here on the beer issue (I didn't mean to rhyme). I miss it so much. I do drink it sometimes, but it just isn't the same because I am usually the only one drinking it.

I would have to agree with Doc. Dark chocolate can be good for you. I have been eating some every other day or so. I try not to deny myself, so I enjoy it all the more. They say that 100grams of dark chocolate a day can help to reduce cardiovascular disease. My husband has his liquor and I have my chocolate!

Mmmmm....Mexican food! I am going out to a Mex restaurant tonight. Can't wait!

Do you know of any French Christmas movies? Maybe along the lines of "A Christmas Story" or "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation"?

Small talk at parties. I spent years being " a good listener" so people loved me. Just make sure you don't become stuck with it...
There is not one Christmas film that compares to National Lampoon's Griswold Family.
